Even in today's economy, employers are struggling to fill some jobs. Are you qualified to apply?

You may not believe it in this sluggish economy, but many careers are still experiencing strong growth year after year, and employers are having trouble finding qualified applicants to fill open positions.

If slow economic recovery makes that seem hard to believe, consider this: According to Jessica Holbrook Hernandez, president/CEO of Great Resumes Fast, "employers are struggling to fill positions that require specialized training or expertise. If the position requires a specialized subset of skills or experience that only a few select candidates have, these positions become very hard to fill."

Marie Zimenoff, President of The National Resume Writers' Association, agrees. "There is a mismatch in the skills people have been trained for and what the market needs," she says. "The workforce needs are changing much faster than educational institutions can create new programs to fill them."

If you're thinking about going back to school, it's important to have the skills appropriate for today's job market. To help you sift through your options, here's a list of jobs that employers need to fill now - and how you can prepare to pursue them.

Career #1 - Accountant

Do you enjoy trying to figure out the best use of your financial resources? That same instinct could serve you well in a career as an accountant - one of the jobs employers are looking to fill right now.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, accountants keep accurate financial records, compute taxes, and help companies run efficiently by assessing their financial operations.

Why They're Needed Now: Two reasons we're seeing an increased demand for accountants? "Stricter regulations and the recent financial crises," says Hernandez simply.

Zimenoff agrees: "Accounting has been a growing field as the financial regulations on businesses and individuals have become increasingly more complex."

Just how much is the field growing? The Department of Labor expects employment for accountants and auditors to increase 16 percent from 2010 to 2020, which means we should see 190,700 new accounting jobs.

How to Prepare For The Job: You'll need at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field to get started, according to the Department, though some employers seek people with a master's degree in accounting or business administration with a concentration in accounting. To enhance your job opportunities, you could get certified as a public accountant (CPA).

Career #2 - Dental Hygienist

If you're always trying to get your loved ones to take better care of themselves, and you're looking to get into a field with high demand, you might want to consider a career as a dental hygienist.

Need a refresher on the world of oral care? No problem: Hygienists might do everything from applying sealants to taking dental x-rays to keeping track of patient treatment plans, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Why They're Needed Now: Surprised this field is growing so quickly? There are a couple of big reasons why. "The field of dentistry has shifted from single-dentist offices to larger offices, which typically employ more hygienists and fewer dentists," says Zimenoff. "This has created more opportunities for hygienists."

Opportunities for dental hygienists arrive in the form of 68,500 new jobs from 2010 to 2020, says the Department of Labor, a 38 percent increase overall.

How to Prepare For The Job: According to the Department of Labor, dental hygienists typically need a certificate or an associate's degree in dental hygiene to get started in a private dental office. They are also required to have a license.

Career #3 - Market Research Analyst

Do you have your finger on the pulse of what's current today? Why not hone that natural gift and pursue a career as a market research analyst? Employers are hungry to find qualified people with these talents to fill open positions.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, market research analysts might forecast marketing and sales trends, create surveys or opinion polls, and measure the efficacy of marketing strategies.

Why They're Needed Now: For a look into why this career is growing, consider Zimenoff's illuminating comments: "As competition in the global marketplace grows, competitive and market intelligence is becoming increasingly more important to companies who want to develop products/services that meet market needs and improve their messaging to increase sales."

How important? The Department of Labor expects employment for market research analysts to grow 41 percent from 2010 to 2020. Based on those projections, we should see the creation of 116,600 new jobs.

How to Prepare For The Job: According to the Department, you'll typically need a bachelor's degree in market research or a related field to get started - though many analysts have degrees in computer science, math, or statistics, or a background in business administration, communications, or one of the social sciences. Many market research analyst jobs also require a master's degree in something like marketing research, although many analysts get a master's in marketing, statistics, or business administration (MBA).

Career #4 - Network and Computer Systems Administrators

Were you the kid who was always trying to figure out how things work? Apply that curiosity to computer systems, and you could be poised to snag a position as a network and computer systems administrator.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, network and computer systems administrators might install network hardware and software for a company, evaluate how well it's working, and train people on how to use it.

Why They're Needed Now: This is another career with a bright future. Why? "Technology is constantly advancing and changing," says Hernandez.

"As companies grow and merge, they want to use technology to manage their business, communicate, and make operations more efficient," Zimenoff explains. "Whether it's connecting offices across the globe, upgrading systems to increase speed and decrease down time, or finding a new system to achieve a business goal, these administrators make business technology goals a reality."

But just how real is demand for this job? The Department of Labor expects employment for network and computer systems administrators to grow 28 percent from 2010 to 2020, which should mean 96,600 new jobs.

How to Prepare For The Job: A bachelor's degree related to computer or information science is the most common requirement for this career, according to the Department of Labor. However, the Department notes that degrees in computer engineering or electrical engineering are usually acceptable as well. Some positions might require professional certification or an associate's degree in a computer field and some work experience.

Career #5 - Personal Financial Advisor

You already know money talks. But did you know it also provides a great career for financially savvy people who want to help others plan for the future and manage their nest eggs. If that sounds like you, consider pursuing a career as a personal financial advisor - another career that has open positions employers are looking to fill.

As a financial advisor you might also educate clients about investment options and risks, help people plan for specific situations like saving for college or retirement, and help monitor clients' accounts to improve performance, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Why They're Needed Now: "With the recent volatility in the stock market, more individuals are seeking financial advice and firms are hiring more advisors to meet this need," explains Zimenoff. "This field also experiences a high turnover rate, as many people enter it without understanding the entrepreneurial nature and the time and effort required to build a profitable business for themselves."

So if you're going after one of the 66,400 new jobs the Department of Labor expects to be added by 2020, it will pay to be focused on your goals. The strong numerical growth translates to an impressive 32 percent expansion in the field.

How to Prepare For The Job: You'll typically need a bachelor's degree to get started as a personal financial advisor, according to the Department of Labor. Degrees in finance, accounting, economics, math, business, or law, could be good preparation. The Department also notes that some colleges and universities now offer programs in financial planning.

Career #6 - Medical and Health Services Managers

Do you have natural leadership skills and compassion? Consider pursuing a career as a medical and health services manager. You could help improve the quality and efficiency of health care in your town - and help fill another open position in need of someone with the right qualifications.

Medical and health services managers direct and coordinate the health care services of a medical facility, says the U.S. Department of Labor. Some common duties include keeping up to date on new health laws and regulations, managing their facility's finances, and making schedules for their employees.

Why They're Needed Now: "Like many positions in health care, this field is growing due to demand," says Zimenoff. "As the baby boomers age and access more services, there will be increasing need for front-line and management in all health care arenas."

Hernandez adds that "services previously offered in hospitals are now shifting to doctor offices. And as the health care industry becomes more complex, physicians will rely on managers to assist them in directing the practice so they can focus on their patients."

edX is a not-for-profit enterprise of its founding partners, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University that offers online learning to on-campus students and to millions of people around the world. To do so, edX is building an open-source online learning platform and hosts an online web portal at www.edx.org for online education.

EdX currently offers HarvardX, MITx and BerkeleyX classes online for free. Beginning in fall 2013, edX will offer WellesleyX , GeorgetownX and the University of Texas System classes online for free. The UT System includes nine universities and six health institutions. In 2014, edX will further expand its consortium, including several international schools, when it begins offering courses from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, McGill University, University of Toronto, Australian National University, Delft University of Technology, and Rice University. The edX institutions aim to extend their collective reach to build a global community of online students. Along with offering online courses, the three universities undertake research on how students learn and how technology can transform learning both on-campus and online throughout the world.

Will edX be adding additional X Universities?

More than 200 institutions from around the world have expressed interest in collaborating with edX since Harvard and MIT announced its creation in May. EdX is focused above all on quality and developing the best not-for-profit model for online education. In addition to providing online courses on the edX platform, the "X University" Consortium will be a forum in which members can share experiences around online learning. Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, the University of Texas system and the other consortium members will work collaboratively to establish the "X University" Consortium, whose membership will expand to include additional "X Universities." As noted above, edX’s newest consortium members include Wellesley, Georgetown, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, McGill University, University of Toronto, Australian National University, Delft University of Technology, and Rice University. Each member of the consortium will offer courses on the edX platform as an "X University." The gathering of many universities' educational content together on one site will enable learners worldwide to access the offered course content of any participating university from a single website, and to use a set of online educational tools shared by all participating universities.

edX will actively explore the addition of other institutions from around the world to the edX platform, and looks forward to adding more "X Universities."

STUDENTS

Who can take edX courses? Will there be an admissions process?

EdX will be available to anyone in the world with an internet connection, and in general, there will not be an admissions process.

Will certificates be awarded?

Yes. Online learners who demonstrate mastery of subjects can earn a certificate of mastery. Certificates will be issued at the discretion of edX and the underlying X University that offered the course under the name of the underlying "X University" from where the course originated, i.e. HarvardX, MITx or BerkeleyX. For the courses in Fall 2012, those certificates will be free. There is a plan to charge a modest fee for certificates in the future. Note: At this time, edX is holding certificates for learners connected with Cuba, Iran, Syria and Sudan pending confirmation that the issuance is in compliance with U.S. embargoes.

What will the scope of the online courses be? How many? Which faculty?

Our goal is to offer a wide variety of courses across disciplines. There are currently fifteen offered on the edX platform.

Who is the learner? Domestic or international? Age range?

Improving teaching and learning for students on our campuses is one of our primary goals. Beyond that, we don't have a target group of potential learners, as the goal is to make these courses available to anyone in the world - from any demographic - who has interest in advancing their own knowledge. The only requirement is to have a computer with an internet connection. More than 150,000 students from over 160 countries registered for MITx's first course, 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics. The age range of students certified in this course was from 14 to 74 years-old.

Will participating universities' standards apply to all courses offered on the edX platform?

Yes: the reach changes exponentially, but the rigor remains the same.

How do you intend to test whether this approach is improving learning?

Edx institutions have assembled faculty members who will collect and analyze data to assess results and the impact edX is having on learning.

TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM

What technology will edX use?

The edX open-source online learning platform will feature interactive learning designed specifically for the web. Features will include: self-paced learning, online discussion groups, wiki-based collaborative learning, assessment of learning as a student progresses through a course, and online laboratories and other interactive learning tools. The platform will also serve as a laboratory from which data will be gathered to better understand how students learn. Because it is open source, the platform will be continuously improved by a worldwide community of collaborators, with new features added as needs arise.

The first version of the technology was used in the first MITx course, 6.002x Circuits and Electronics, which launched in Spring, 2012.

How is this different from what other universities are doing online?

EdX is a not-for-profit enterprise built upon the shared educational missions of its founding partners, Harvard University and MIT. The edX platform will be available as open source. Also, a primary goal of edX is to improve teaching and learning on campus by experimenting with blended models of learning and by supporting faculty in conducting significant research on how students learn.

Students satisfying the assessment and participation requirements will be awarded an Undergraduate Advanced Diploma in Data and Systems Analysis from the University of Oxford. Outstanding performance will qualify for a Distinction. The Advanced Diploma also carries a CATS rating of 60 points at FHEQ Level 6. For details of what benefits that may provide, see below. Credit Transfer Opportunities The Diploma carries a Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) rating of 60 points at FHEQ Level 6. Students awarded the Advanced Diploma may be able to transfer their credit points to other HE institutions, including the Open University. Under the Department's agreement with the Open University, students can be awarded full-rate credit for the Diploma, i.e. they will receive 60 CATS points of transferred credit. These credit points will be without a level, BA/BSc designation or grade of pass. Assessment methods
Your assessment is based on the unit assignments. In each year you must complete all of the set assignments. The regulations allow for re-submissions of assessed work in certain circumstances. All assessments are subject to moderation by an external examiner. Teaching methods
What does studying the course involve?
All of the course material will be provided over the Internet. You will need a suitable computer which has access to the Internet; for details see Computing Facilities Required. In particular, you will be using some open-source tools that may be downloaded, free of charge, from the Internet. The units will be studied in sequence. Normally you will have about seven weeks to study each one, and this includes time to prepare the unit assignment. Your study of a unit will be guided by the Internet material and will involve a mixture of reading web material, doing self-study exercises and participating in group exercises with other students, plus writing the unit assignment. Some of the exercises you do will involve interacting with other students, and to enable this to be effective these exercises may be scheduled to take place during a specified period. For this reason, and in order to help you follow a structured pattern of study, we do issue a recommended unit timetable. Within this, you do have considerable freedom to study in your own time and at your own pace. Details of the unit timetable will be provided on enrolment. It is a requirement of the award that students must participate in the various course activities to the satisfaction of their tutors. Students on the course are also supported by a mail conferencing system. Using this, students are able to discuss their problems with their fellow students and the course tutors. This system forms an integral part of the course experience and is very popular among students, and forms a sort of 'virtual classroom'. There is also a 'virtual common room' in which you can discuss or 'chat' with others in your group on more wide ranging matters - an ideal way of getting to know each other. Each unit will include a marked assignment. This must be submitted electronically for assessment by the stipulated dates. This course does not involve a formal written examination and does not require you to come to Oxford. Tutorial Support

Payment
The course fees for 2012-13 are £1,850 (Home/EU) £3,500 (non-EU). A non-refundable deposit of £250 or 10% of the course fee, whichever if higher, must be paid on acceptance. The remainder of the fee can be paid in instalments. The fee includes all Internet course materials and tuition. If a student withdraws before completing the course, a refund of part of the fees may be payable, depending on the date of withdrawal. Schedule:
The MBA is offered as a full-time, one year course and a part-time, two-year course. Part-time programme
The part-time programme is an evening programme designed to allow students to work full-time while completing the programme. Two nights a week the classes take place, taking up between 6-8 hours. Class preparation, casework and assignments will demand a further 10-12 hours a week. On Fridays no courses are scheduled.

Consultancy project and thesis
At the final stage of their MBA programme students can choose to do an in-company internship. Some choose this option to gain work experience in The Netherlands, others use the internship to gather data for their thesis. All students conclude the MBA programme with an individual thesis, under the supervision of MBA faculty.

- Bachelor or Master degree: Applicants are required to hold a recognized Bachelor or Master degree;
- Work experience: A minimum of three years of relevant business experience is required;
- GMAT or GRE: The GMAT or GRE is compulsory for all applicants to the full-time programme. Applicants with a PhD may apply for an exemption. We require a minimum GMAT score of around 600 and a minimum analytical writing score of around 4.0. The required minimum GRE score is around 620 (quantitative) and around 4.0 for analytical writing (the combined score should be 1200 or higher). If you apply to the part-time programme you can opt to take our in-house test as a substitute for the GMAT or GRE. You can ask the test institutions to send your score report directly to us.
- English language proficiency: We require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum TOEFL score: 100. Minimum IELTS score: 7.0. You can be exempted from this requirement if you are a native speaker of English, you have 2 years of international professional experience, you have taken an English-taught Bachelor or Master degree, (please note that your diploma or transcripts should mention that the language of instruction was English. If the language of instruction is not mentioned on the transcript or diploma, you will need to submit a letter from your higher education institute stating that the curriculum is completely taught in English), you obtained a Dutch VWO high school diploma.

Health care providers added 24,000 new jobs in October 2010, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, while averaging an increase of 20,000 jobs per month over the past year.

Health care's hot track record for hiring isn't a recent occurrence. It's actually part of a much more long-term trend, says John Canally, an economist and investment strategist at Boston-based LPL Financial.

"Health care added 700,000 jobs from December 2007, when the recession started, to October 2010," says Canally. "No other job sector did that."
