How We Give Full Tuition Scholarships to All Students

At Berea College, we provide every student with a full-tuition scholarship, valued at $25,500 in 2009–10. How do we do it?

In place of tuition dollars, we rely on endowment income to cover nearly 80% of our yearly budget. Gifts and financial aid fill the 20% gap.  

In addition to tuition scholarships, students receive financial support through Berea’s work program. Students work in campus jobs to earn money for room, board, and other personal costs. In recent years, 85% of Berea’s incoming freshmen have also been eligible for federal Pell grants. 

Guided by this inclusive Christian message of impartial love, Berea's founders held fast to their radical vision of a college and a community committed to interracial education, to the Appalachian region, and to the equality of all women and men from all "nations and climes."
