Royal college of Surgeons in Ireland, more info:
School of Medicine
The ethos of the Medical School is founded on the principle that the patient’s
interest is paramount in clinical teaching, medical practice and research. The
curriculum is designed to give the student a sound knowledge of the principles
of both the science and the art of medicine.
A spirit of enquiry is also fostered and students may carry out research in
the academic departments of the College during the summer vacations.
The student is exposed to a variety of specialties and encouraged to develop a
balanced perspective of domiciliary, community and hospital care. The clinical
teaching facilities provided by the College combined with the expertise and
dedication of the clinical teachers, ensure that students receive training of
the highest standard.
The Medical Act of 1886 provided that graduates had to be educated in surgery,
medicine and obstetrics. Graduates of the RCSI received Licentiates in these
three subjects. Since 1978, the College has been a recognised College of the
National University of Ireland, awarding M.B., B.Ch., BAO to its graduates in
addition to the Licentiates.
Surgery (The Colles Institute) & Postgraduate Faculties
RCSI has successfully shaped and led the training of surgeons since its
foundation. Standards set by the College ensure that surgeons are trained to
the highest possible level and that the high quality of surgical care expected
of all trained surgeons is maintained and updated for as long as a surgeon
remains in clinical practice.
The pathway to becoming a surgeon begins with the two year Basic Surgical
Training Programme (BST) for medical graduates who have
completed their internship and wish to pursue a career in surgery. This is
followed by a number of years of Higher Surgical Training (HST) in specialist
areas such as cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery,
otolaryngology head & neck surgery, urology, paediatric surgery, plastic
reconstructive & aesthetic surgery and trauma and orthopaedic surgery
The Department of Surgery provides clinical care across a wide variety of
specialties to the population of North Dublin through the campus in Beaumont
Hospital. In addition, the National Neurosurgical
Centre and the National Pancreas and Renal Transplant Programme are
accommodated within the unit in Beaumont
Hospital.
Teaching at undergraduate level is provided to medical students within the
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
In addition to the clinical facilities in Beaumont Hospital, students are sent
to James Connolly Memorial Hospital (Blanchardstown), Our Lady of Lourdes
Hospital (Drogheda), Cavan General Hospital, Mullingar General Hospital, St.
Luke's Hospital (Kilkenny) and Waterford Regional Hospital.
At postgraduate level, RCSI provides recognised training at Basic and Higher
Surgical levels for aspiring surgeons from Ireland
and Overseas. Examinations, including the (traditional) Fellowship of the
Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
and the newer membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland,
are organised and administered
