Swedish Education at Chailmers College
Education
Chalmers offers many different Master's Programmes. All programmes are 2 years of study and are all taught in English and Chalmers welcomes both foreign and Swedish students. In our Master’s programmes you will have the opportunity to work with teachers from all over the world and members of our internationally recognised research groups will act as supervisors and lecturers.

In addition Chalmers has research programmes that can be conducted in English leading to a Licentiate and a PhD degree.

Chalmers has student exchange programmes with the Nordic countries, within the European Union and World Wide.

National degree programmes are given in Swedish and lead to the degrees "Högskoleingenjör" (Bachelor of Science in Engineering), "Civilingenjör" (Master of Science in Engineering), "Arkitekt" (Master of Architecture) as well as maritime programmes.

Chalmers offers continuing professional development programmes for practicing engineers

About us

Chalmers in central Göteborg on the Swedish West Coast

Chalmers is a university of technology in which research and teaching are conducted on a broad front within technology, natural science and architecture. Our inspiration lies in the joy of discovery and the desire to learn. Underlying everything we do is a wish to contribute to sustainable development both in Sweden and world-wide.

Our research work deals ultimately with improving people’s conditions, and we often cross traditional boundaries in order to solve the problems of the future. Chalmers has become strong within several areas of science, and some of our research leads its field internationally. We wish in particular to develop and strengthen our research in the fields of bioscience, information technology, environmental science and nanotechnology.

Chalmers is a pioneer in Europe in the field of start-up companies, and has built up an efficient system of innovation in order to find applications in research into the formation of companies.

Chalmers has great aspirations to develop continually by opening doors to the outside world and by thinking innovatively. We have a close and productive collaboration with business and society at large. In this way we reinforce our own development, at the same time as we contribute to the growth of society.

Chalmers was founded in 1829 as a result of a donation from the director of the Swedish East India Company, William Chalmers. His motto, and ours, is:

Avancez!

Collaboration

”Chalmers is an open arena in which the forces of innovation are gathered together. And Chalmers’ researchers are also successful as regards creating a stimulating collaboration between the business world and the university,” says. Johan Carlsten, Vice President responsible for contacts and in-service training with the business world.

We are running joint research projects and in-service training together with companies and organisations. We also act as advisers or sounding boards. Thanks to this collaboration our research is of benefit and we are aware of demands and expectations of the world around us.

Careers liaison

We like to help put well-educated individuals in touch with potential employers through our Careers Service.

Inspiritation for the young

The interest of young people in technology and natural science is decisive for our future. We meet children and their teachers on campus, in the community, or at meeting places such as the Festival of Science, Universeum and technology competitions. Interest is created at these events and curiosity satisfied.

In-service training

We offer in-service training courses, international masters courses, courses within the ordinary programmes (single subject courses) and further education courses for employees.

Academies

Chalmers Academies provide interfaces between research and MSc level education at Chalmers and companies, consulting organisations and public agencies and authorities.

Each Academy provides a forum for mutually beneficial exchange of information, knowledge, ideas and visions within a specific area. Students have easy access to an overview of education programmes and activities within the area, together with a network of key contacts within partner companies. In a similar manner companies will have easy access to information about MSc programmes at Chalmers that are most relevant to them.

At present there are three Academies at Chalmers representing approximately 30 programmes with more than 1 000 students per year.

  • Chalmers Automotive Academy
  • Chalmers Energy Academy
  • Chalmers ICT Academy

  • Science parks and incubators

There are two science parks at Chalmers – one adjoining the Johanneberg Campus and the other the Lindholmen Campus.

The science parks combine companies’ knowhow and innovative drive with academic expertise. In the creative environment of the science park your company is always close to expert knowledge – a rapid way of becoming more competitive.

A characteristic of Chalmers science park environments is that they offer more than mere accommodation. They offer their companies close proximity to a high-tech intellectual environment with research on the technical front and with up-to-date engineering expertise that can be recruited. They also offer qualified Chalmers organizations which can make an active contribution to technological and business development and have an overall view of Chalmers’ whole range of skills and resources. Chalmers’ two science parks therefore constitute suitable environments for the development of new technology, innovations and business concepts, both for greater competitiveness in existing areas of business and for new business ideas.

    Incubators

In both science parks Chalmers Innovation runs incubator functions. There are incubator programmes at the Stena Center (Chalmers Science Park) and the Lindholmen Center (Lindholmen Science Park). The incubator is a tailor-made environment where young companies with ideas can grow strong. The incubator setting is adapted to growth enterprises rather than established companies.
  • Chalmers Initiative

In January 2007 Chalmers’ President, Karin Markides, launched a new approach, the Chalmers Initiative. This is a strategy for how we will meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

    The Chalmers Initiative shall….

    • serve as an internal driving force
    • take as its starting point broad themes, combined with bottom-up processes
    • stimulate cross-disciplinary interaction and cooperation
    • strengthen Chalmers’ profile as an attractive place for studies and research
    • promote continuous strategic processes permitting development over time
    • foster creative meetings, increased dynamics and collaboration among research areas
    • capture the whole range of core activities
    • increase the scope for attracting funding and collaborators

    Contact

The Initiative centres on various perspectives of Chalmers. These perspectives are based on unique knowledge and competence, and through them all parts of Chalmers’ core activities will be connected.

    Organisation

The board of the Chalmers University of Technology Foundation

The board of the Chalmers University of Technology Foundation is the supreme decision-making body and appoints the University board, decides on discharge from liability and manages the foundation capital.

    The University board

The University board is responsible for the overall planning, co-ordination and follow-up of the University's activities. Under the University board, the President is responsible for operations generally.

    Departments and research groups

Teaching and research is carried out by Chalmers' 16 departments. The departments are led by a head of department, and are made up of research groups and divisions.

    Centres

At Chalmers there are six national competence centres financed by Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency. There are also a number of centres cooperating across traditional departmental boundaries.

    Administration and Services

Under Administration and Services are the following areas of activity: the IT Systems and Services, the Marketing and Development Office, the Office for Administration of Studies, the Office of Finance, the Office of Planning, the Office of Student Services, the Personnel Department, the Public Relations and Communications, the Service Department and the Strategic Analysis and Specialist Support.

    The Chalmers Group

Included in the Chalmers group are: Chalmers tekniska högskola AB with its subsidiary companies Chalmersfastigheter AB, Chalmers Advanced Management Programs AB (CHAMPS) and AB Chalmersinvest .
  • Premises and campus

"One Chalmers – two campuses with internationally sought after research and teaching environments" is the new vision for development of the Chalmers campus environment.

Chalmers is located on two campuses in the city of Göteborg. Five minutes walk from Götaplatsen is Johanneberg campus, and in the middle of the expansive Norra Älvstranden (north of the river) is Lindholmen campus with e.g. the IT University and Department of Maritime Studies.

What is more, Chalmers conducts research at Onsala Space Observatory 45 km south of Göteborg and at the Lundberg Laboratory on Medicinareberget in Göteborg.

Chalmersfastigheter's business is administering, rebuilding and extending premises and properties for Chalmers. Its main task is to create attractive, competitive campuses for Chalmers which are fit for purpose, and where every square metre is intended to engender a feeling of a world-class campus. The work has also focused on renting out premises to clients outside the sphere of Chalmers, clients who see the added value in working in a creative and inspiring campus environment.

We believe in an environment that produces creative encounters between researchers, students and the business world. An environment to feel proud of. An environment in which to develop and feel happy.

  • Eating, drinking and socialising

Chalmers’ campus areas offer you many opportunities to get a bite to eat, have something nice to drink and socialise in pleasant surroundings.

On Chalmers Restaurants’ homepage you will find those restaurants and pubs located on Johanneberg Campus. If you wish to see the menu at the restaurant in Villan, then look at their home page.

On the homepage for Lindholmen Science Park you will find information about opportunities for lunch and what is happening in the area.
