Facts about Working in Canada

  1. In order to work in Canada you are required to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) . Employers are now required to ask to see both a Social Insurance Number (SIN card) and a Canadian status document (Canadian birth certificate, Permanent Resident Card, Citizenship Card, work permit or study permit) when they offer you a job.  The Brantford Service Canada Centre is where you can apply for Social Insurance Number and also provides information about other services available to you.
  1. Most employers in Canada require a resume, which illustrates a summary of your work experience, skills and education. Working: Canadian Style and Working in Ontario are excellent newcomer guides to help prepare you to find a job, keep a job and plan your career.  Immigrant Settlement Services Brantford YMCA can also help you with your job search needs.
  1. Most jobs in Brantford will require you to speak English. English as a Second Language offers training in reading, writing and speaking English.
  1. Foreign Credentials Referral Office can help foreign-trained workers succeed in Canada.  The Canadian Government offers information about helping internationally trained individuals find information required to get their credentials assessed and recognized more quickly.  Work in your profession is another link that will provide you with information about the Ontario provincial requirements for licensing and certification in your regulated profession or trade.
