Computer Science School in Netherlands - University Degree Courses
Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University: The
Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), part of Leiden
University, is situated in the same building as the Department of
Mathematics. The total number of students is approximately 300. The
program complies with the new Bachelor/Master structure. The first year
is the so-called propedeuse. Knowledge of the Dutch language is
obligatory for the bachelor program. After the three-year bachelor it
is possible to extend your study with a two-year master program. Master
students have several training options: Computer Science, Media
Technology, ICT in Business. The courses of the master program are
given in English, and a student is required to have proof of a
sufficiently high TOEFL score (a language proficiency test). After the
master program a student has the option to join the PhD program within
one of our research groups. Currently there are approximately 20
graduate student (AIO's) participating in the PhD.
Graduate
& Undergraduate degree programmes: BA in Computer Science, MA in
Computer Science, Media Technology, ICT in Business. PhD programs in
Algorithms & Programming methodoloy, Digital Life Technologies,
High Performance Computing, Imaging & BioInformatics, Software
Engineering & Information Systems (networking, databases etc),
Theoretical Computer Science
Applying for a Master:
Graduation Procedure The
formal date of graduation is the date on which you have met all the
requirements of the MSc in Computer Science program. This date is
recorded in your transcripts and also on your diploma. This date
coincides with the date on which you have received a satisfactory grade
for the last, required component of your approved program of study.
Master’s Graduation Ceremony and Application for the Master’s Graduation Ceremony Students
who are graduated or who are close to graduation can apply for
participation in the Master’s Graduation Ceremony. The Graduation
Ceremony takes place six times a year. In this ceremony you will
receive the MSc in Computer Science diploma from the Board of
Examiners. Friends and family are welcome to witness this formal and
festive occasion.

Research Groups Within LIACS four research clusters exist:
Algorithms, headed by prof.dr. Thomas Bäck & prof.dr. Joost Kok. Research
on methods and techniques for algorithm design and analysis, with an
emphasis on algorithms and architectures for larger data volumes as
well as on natural computing.
Computer Systems, headed by prof.dr. Ed DePrettere & prof.dr. Harry Wijshoff. Methods
and techniques for the design, implementation and application of
advanced computer systems, in particular parallel, distributed and
embedded computer systems.
Foundation of Software Technology, headed by prof.dr. Farhad Arbab & prof.dr. Joost Kok. Development of formalisms, methods, techniques and tools to design, analyze, and construct software systems and components.
Imagery & Media, headed by dr. Michael Lew & dr.ir. Fons Verbeek. Research
on methods and techniques for the analysis and synthesis of images,
pattern recognition, image fusion, 3D reconstruction and visualization,
computer vision, imaging systems, image search, media technology.
