Welcome to Aalborg University, Denmark
At Aalborg University (AAU), we dare to be different!
A characteristic feature of AAU is the courage to follow new paths within research as well as education. As a result, AAU is one of Denmark’s leading universities in terms of uncovering innovative ways of cooperating with the surrounding world at a local as well as national and international level.

Organisation of Management
Aalborg University is a self-governing institution within the public administration and under the supervision of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The research and education at Aalborg University is organised in faculties, departments and boards of studies. Furthermore, the Rector of the University can establish interdisciplinary centers to carry out temporary activities. A central administration, managed by a University Director as well as a Pro-rector and a number of Rector’s Committees, supports the Rector. The University’s collective library and documentation service is maintained by a University library, which is managed by a Chief Librarian.
Boards of Studies (Studienævn)
Each study programme or a cluster of study programmes has a Board of Studies as their closest managerial body. The function of the Board of Studies is to ensure the organisation, implementation and long-term development of the educational programmes.
The Board of Studies expresses its opinion on all matters pertaining to its educational areas and discusses educational matters submitted by Rector or persons authorised by Rector. In collaboration with the Director of Studies and the Head of Department, the Board of Studies is responsible for the drawing up of a curriculum or proposals for changes to the curriculum to be submitted to the Dean for approval.
The Board of Studies is furthermore responsible for ensuring and developing the quality of the educational programmes and for the follow up on evaluations of these programmes. It is also the duties of the Board of Studies to consider applications from the students for the transfer of credits and exemptions.
The Board of Studies is comprised of up to 10 members, of which half are student representatives and the other half are representatives of the academic staff. The academic staff is elected for a three-year term and the students for a one-year term. The Board of Studies elects a Chairman among one of its tenured directors of studies.
Faculties
Aalborg University encompasses three faculties, under which all research and educational activities take place. Each faculty is organised into a number of departments, centres and schools, which work with specific scientific areas within the faculty’s main areas. Likewise, the boards of studies - which are responsible for the various study programmes - are also organised under each faculty. The three faculties are each headed by a dean.
As of January 1, 2007 the Danish Building Research Institute (SBi) is also a part of Aalborg University.
